Sewage Treatment Plant Automation with IoTMATION

Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) or Effluent Treatment Plants (ETP) have become an integral part of any large building complex, both commercial as well as residential. Increased awareness regarding the environment, scarcity of available water, and government regulations regarding mandatory treatment of waste water has led to a near 100% adoption of STPs/ETPs in large as well as medium cities in India. Almost all new buildings being developed are utilizing STP to treat waste water and use it for various purposes like water lawns and gardens or to supply water for restrooms. Modern technologies have become available that claim to treat waste water to an extent that it can be used as potable water. However, such application has not found popularity in India yet.

Though STPs are very commonly used, managing a STP can be resource intensive. Both in terms of energy consumption and needed man power, running an STP is an expensive affair. Also maintenance of the STPs may become significant overhead if not managed properly.

The STP process automation with IoTMATION helps address these issues. An automated work flow based on sensor based monitoring of the required parameters ensure optimum running of various motors and compressors. This ensures the motors are never running dry, there is never an overflow or any tank, and optimal level of use of processes like oxidation. This ensures lesser energy usage required in running the motors, less frequent breakdown of the motors and less required maintenance, and lesser use of any chemical used in the treatment process. The automaton also almost entirely eliminates any need of manual intervention and thereby removes the need of human labor in running the plant. All this leads to significant cost savings in running the STP.

The Automation Process with IoTMATION

The diagram above depicts the representative flow in a typical Sewage Treatment Plant. The process usually involves letting water in a tank, letting solid waste to get deposited at the bottom, mixing any bleaching/disinfectant agent, and oxidation to increase the level of oxygen. The water at every stage is monitored to check if it meets the requirement for transferring to the next level and is accordingly transferred.

IoTMTION employs several sensors to monitor the various required parameters like the water level at various tanks, level of oxygen saturation in the water, etc. These sensor values are fed to the IoTMATION Controller. The Controller runs the STP workflow logic based on these sensor values. If the logic decides that some motor needs to be turned on or turned off; it activates the respective relay to accomplish the same.

The fully automated work flow ensures smooth operation of the plant. It ensures all the parameters are met to the optimal level and there is neither over use of any resources leading to higher cost, neither under use leading to not meeting the statutory or regulatory requirements.
