LoRa-Based Smart Irrigation for L&T Agricultural Project
Large-Scale Precision Agriculture with LoRaWAN Technology
Overview
L&T's large-scale agricultural project in Betul, Madhya Pradesh spanning over 500 acres was facing challenges with traditional flood irrigation methods. The vast farmland with multiple crop zones required efficient water management to maximize productivity.
IoTMATE deployed a comprehensive LoRa-based smart irrigation solution that uses soil moisture sensors, weather data, and automated scheduling to optimize water delivery across all farming zones.
The solution was designed to handle the scale and diversity of crops in the project, providing zone-wise irrigation control and real-time monitoring for the entire farm.
Challenges
Large Scale Coverage
The 500+ acre farmland spread across multiple zones with different crop types, each requiring customized irrigation schedules.
Water Resource Management
Betul region faces seasonal water scarcity, requiring efficient utilization of available water resources from borewells and canals.
Multi-Crop Complexity
Different crops across zones required different irrigation patterns, making uniform irrigation inefficient and wasteful.
Remote Monitoring Need
Manual monitoring of such a large area was impractical, and real-time visibility was essential for operational efficiency.
Connectivity Challenges
Poor cellular coverage in rural Betul made traditional IoT solutions infeasible, requiring long-range communication technology.
Our Solution
LoRaWAN Sensor Network
Deployed 100+ LoRa-enabled soil moisture sensors across all zones with a range of up to 10km, providing complete coverage without cellular dependency.
Weather-Integrated Control
Integrated local weather station data including temperature, humidity, wind speed, and rainfall prediction for smart irrigation scheduling.
Zone-Level Irrigation Control
Installed LoRa-controlled valves and pumps for each farming zone, enabling precise irrigation scheduling based on crop requirements.
Automated Scheduling System
Developed scheduling algorithms that consider crop type, growth stage, weather forecast, and soil moisture to calculate optimal irrigation timing.
Centralized Dashboard
Created a comprehensive web and mobile dashboard showing zone-wise status, water consumption analytics, and remote control capabilities.
Implementation Timeline
Phase 1 (Week 1-3): Site survey, LoRa gateway positioning, and network coverage testing across all farming zones.
Phase 2 (Week 4-7): Sensor installation across zones, weather station setup, and valve controller deployment.
Phase 3 (Week 8-12): Cloud platform development, dashboard creation, and system integration testing.
Phase 4 (Week 13-16): Staff training, parallel operation, fine-tuning, and complete handover.
Results & Impact
Reduction in water consumption through precision irrigation scheduling
Increase in crop yield through optimized irrigation timing
Decrease in manual monitoring and irrigation management labor
Long-range connectivity without cellular network dependency
“The LoRa-based smart irrigation system from IoTMATE has transformed our agricultural operations in Betul. The ability to monitor and control irrigation across 500+ acres remotely has significantly improved our operational efficiency.”
